What is Lightning Roulette and how is it different from normal roulette?

Lightning Roulette is European roulette played on a real wheel in a live studio, with one added step: an RNG picks a handful of "Lightning Numbers" each round and attaches a multiplier to each. Evolution released the game in 2018, and it won EGR's Game of the Year award that same year. It streams 24/7 from the company's Riga studio with a live presenter.

Underneath the production, the math of the wheel is untouched. There are 37 pockets numbered 0 to 36, 18 red, 18 black and one green zero. The ball is spun by the dealer and lands where physics takes it. The lightning layer sits on top of that result: it decides how much a straight-up winner is paid, not which number wins.

Two rule changes separate the game from a standard roulette table. A straight-up bet on a number that was not struck pays 29:1 rather than 35:1, and a straight-up bet on a struck number pays the multiplier shown, from 50:1 to 500:1. Every other bet type behaves as it would on any European table.

How does a Lightning Roulette round work?

A round takes roughly a minute from the opening of betting to the payout, so the tracker sees 60 to 70 spins per hour. The sequence never varies.

1. Betting opens. You have about 40 to 50 seconds to place chips on the racetrack or the main layout. Limits typically run from 0.20 up to 5,000 per bet, with straight-up maximums set lower than outside-bet maximums at most operators.
2. Betting closes and lightning strikes. The RNG selects between one and five numbers and shows each with a multiplier of 50x, 100x, 150x, 200x, 250x, 300x, 350x, 400x or 500x. The struck numbers light up on the layout.
3. The spin. The dealer launches the ball. This is a physical spin on a real wheel, unaffected by which numbers were struck.
4. The result. The winning number is announced. Straight-up bets on it are paid at 29:1, or at the multiplier if it was a Lightning Number. All other winning bets are paid at their ordinary odds.

Because the Lightning Numbers are revealed only after betting closes, you cannot place a chip on a number because it has been struck. You choose your numbers blind, and the lightning either finds one of them or it does not.

What bets can you place and what do they pay?

Every bet available on a European roulette table is available here, and all of them except straight-up pay their traditional odds. The table below lists each bet with its probability on a 37-pocket wheel and the payout in Lightning Roulette.

The last column matters more than anything else in the table. A split covering two struck numbers still pays 17:1, and a corner, a dozen or a color bet is never touched by lightning. Only a chip sitting entirely on a single number qualifies.

If you like straight-up bets, you take a worse payout on most wins (29:1 rather than 35:1) in exchange for the multiplier chances. How do Lightning Numbers and multipliers work?

Each round, the RNG strikes between one and five numbers, most often three, and assigns each one a multiplier that is heavily weighted toward 50x and 100x. The Lightning Numbers and multipliers page goes deeper; the essentials follow.

The average was about 2.7 struck numbers per round. Weighting the right-hand column by the left-hand column gives an expected Lightning-win rate of roughly 7.3% per spin, and the observed figure was 7.33%: 7,164 of the 97,698 rounds ended with the ball landing on a struck number.

The multiplier values tell the second half of the story. Of all numbers struck in that period, 37.5% received 50x and 42.0% received 100x, so 79.5% of strikes carried one of the two lowest values. The 200x tier appeared on 8.5% of strikes and 150x on 6.0%. The top value of 500x was assigned to about 3.0% of struck numbers, while 250x, 300x, 350x and 400x together accounted for 3.0%.

A 500x result therefore requires two independent things: the RNG has to put 500x on a number, and the ball then has to land on that number. In practice a 500x payout occurred in 204 of 97,698 rounds, 0.21% of spins, or about once every 480 spins. Over the last 30 days alone there were 105 such rounds, and on 2026-08-27 the tracker logged 500x wins on 9 and on 14 plus 400x wins on 23, 29, 3 and 0. Big multipliers are rare per spin but visible every day on a table that runs 24/7.

Between Lightning wins, the average gap over 90 days was 13.6 spins and the longest was 150 spins, about two and a half hours without a multiplier payout. Gaps like that are ordinary variance and say nothing about the following spin.

What is the RTP and house edge of Lightning Roulette?

Evolution states a theoretical return of 97.30% for every bet in the game, which is a house edge of 2.70%, identical to single-zero European roulette. The multipliers are not a bonus layered on top of standard odds. They are paid for by the reduced base payout on straight-up bets, and the whole package balances back to the same figure.

The arithmetic makes this clear. A straight-up bet wins 1 time in 37. Paid at 35:1, that returns 36/37 of stakes, or 97.30%. Paid at 29:1 with no multipliers at all, it would return only 30/37, about 81.1%. The 16-point gap is what the Lightning Numbers give back, averaged over every spin and every multiplier tier, so that the long-run return lands on 97.30% again.

The volatility column is the only thing that differs between bets. Even-money bets return 97.30% through many small wins; straight-up bets return the same 97.30% through long losing runs, frequent 29:1 payouts and rare 500:1 payouts. Which you prefer is a matter of temperament and bankroll, not of expected value.

Operators may cap the maximum payout at 500,000 per player per round. That ceiling only bites at high stakes on a 500x result and does not change the practical RTP for ordinary bet sizes. How do real Lightning Roulette results compare with the theory?

Across 97,698 spins in the last 90 days, every one of the 37 numbers landed between 2.61% and 2.80% of the time, against a theoretical 2.70%. The physical wheel is doing exactly what an unbiased wheel should do. The color split was equally tidy: red 48.71%, black 48.55%, zero 2.74%, against a theory of 48.65%, 48.65% and 2.70%.

The spread from 2,551 to 2,740 hits is a difference of 189 spins across nearly 98,000, which is normal for a sample of this size. A number that ran 0.09 points hot for three months is not a biased pocket; some number always sits at the top of the list, and next quarter it will be a different one.

The Lightning results line up with theory too. The observed 7.33% Lightning-win rate matches the 7.3% predicted from the strike counts. The paid multipliers over 90 days were 50x in 2,655 rounds, 100x in 3,449, 200x in 688, 300x in 123, 400x in 45 and 500x in 204. Almost half of all Lightning wins (48.1%) were 100x, and 85.2% were either 50x or 100x.

How should you size your bankroll and choose bets in Lightning Roulette?

Bet a fixed amount per spin that is a small fraction of a loss limit you set in advance, and pick between inside and outside bets according to how much variance you can tolerate, because the expected return is 97.30% wherever you put the chip. That is the entire strategic content of the game, and everything else is about managing swings.

For straight-up players, the swings are severe. Any single number hits 1 time in 37, and the probability of seeing it at least once in 37 spins is only 63.7%; even in 100 spins it is 93.5%, which means about 1 player in 15 sits through 100 spins without their number landing once. When it does land, the usual reward is 29:1. A 500x needs the number to be both struck and hit, an event our data puts at roughly 1 spin in 480 for the table as a whole, and far rarer for one specific number.

Spreading chips across several numbers raises hit frequency but not the return. Ten straight-up chips cover 27.0% of the wheel, so one wins roughly every 3.7 spins, paying 29 units against the 10 staked; over time everything sums back to 97.30%.

For outside players, Martingale deserves a specific warning because the game runs so quickly. Even-money bets lose 51.35% of the time, and a run of eight straight losses happens with probability 0.48%, about once every 208 sequences. At 60 to 70 spins an hour, an evening of doubling after every loss will meet that run often enough to matter, and by the eighth double the stake is 128 times the opening bet, usually beyond the table maximum. A workable compromise is a small straight-up chip beside a larger outside bet: the outside bet supplies the rhythm, the straight-up chip the chance of a headline result, and the combined return is still 97.30%. Keep the straight-up chip at a size you can lose 100 times in a row, because the data says that will happen.

What are the most common Lightning Roulette mistakes?

The mistakes that cost the most are chasing struck numbers, expecting straight-up bets to behave like classic roulette, and treating the multiplier history as a signal.

Betting a number because it was just struck. Lightning Numbers are chosen after betting closes and reset every round. A 500x on 14 last spin has no bearing on where the lightning goes next. The RNG does not track its own history.

Assuming 35:1 on straight-up wins. Players arriving from standard roulette budget for 35:1 and find their bankroll draining faster than expected, because most straight-up wins here pay 29:1. Treat the game as roulette with a lower base payout and a lottery ticket attached.

Putting a split or corner over struck numbers and expecting a multiplier. Only straight-up chips qualify. A corner covering four struck numbers pays 8:1 when one of them hits, nothing more.

Reading droughts as pressure. The longest 90-day run without a Lightning win was 150 spins. After such a run the next spin still carries the same roughly 7% chance. Raising stakes to "catch up" simply puts more money into the same odds.

Ignoring the 2.70% edge because it sounds small. The edge is applied to turnover, and turnover at 65 spins an hour adds up. A player staking 10 units a spin turns over 650 units an hour and, on average, loses about 17.5 of them.
